Situated along a quiet road through the garrigue, this garden was intended to reflect the soft silvers, greys and greens of the natural landscape. As its owner is a founder member of the Languedoc Mediterranean Garden Society, it is very much a ‘dry’ garden with no installed irrigation. Unusually, the unfussy layout was decided on after inviting suggestions from other MGS members.
Before planting. The slope down from the terrace made as gentle as possible for ease of maintenance.
New steps constructed using natural materials and with a gentle rise.
The planting concentrates as much on foliage form and colour as on flowers so that it remains attractive all year. All the plants were installed on one day with the enthusiastic assistance of the society members. The whole slope was then mulched with gravel to aid water retention.
The view from the terrace’ before’ and ‘after’ illustrates how the colour scheme leads the eye into the calming light and shade of the wider natural garden.
